Still People Pleasing?

“Unspoken expectations are premeditated resentments.”

This quote has been doing the rounds recently...

Here's my attempt to make it make sense:

I don't know about you, but my brain is chaotic.

Imagine a cross between:

"The Room Of Requirement" & "A Car Boot Sale Of Ideas"

It's mostly junk and unwanted football memorabilia...

...but there's the occasional gem.

And yet… The idea that I expect people can assume and make sense of this, void of my communication, is insanity!

But for years... this is how I lived my life.

  • I assumed people knew what I was thinking
  • I passed it off as "common sense"
  • I was continually frustrated.

Why? Because I had unspoken expectations.

Here's the thing Reader,

Assumptions in business are dangerous.

Especially when people are involved.

  • Your employees.
  • Your customers.
  • Your clients.

THEY ARE NOT MIND READERS!

The process of synthesising and extracting thoughts from your head is not an easy one. But being able to do so is one of your most important indicators of success.

As a founder… your business relies on it!

  • Communicating a product/service.
  • Communicating a request.
  • Communicating a vision.

Any resentment you feel will manifest itself as frustration, and likely be revealed in your motivation (or lack thereof).

Every week, I hear from frustrated and unmotivated founders who lack the clarity to take action because of avoidable behaviours like this...

Being aware of this was enough for me to recognise the harm it was causing.

Which is why I help others do the same.

Because taking action, in the form of improving my communication, has improved every aspect of my life…

  • My relationships. ❤️
  • My business. 📈
  • My finances. 💰

It sounds crazy... but being able to communicate effectively, by definition, will get you closer to what you want.

Never hold onto expectations. Share them or surrender them entirely.

Otherwise... You’re premeditating resentment.

Happy Saturday!

Rick Rubin - Co-Founder of Def Jam Records and one of the most successful record producers ever. Last week he was asked the question: “What if other people don’t like your stuff?” His response? “I’m not making it for them, I’m making it for me” I’ve been chewing over this the past week. Here’s why it matters to you… There is a difference between art & business. He was speaking as an artist. Art: “Is created for its own sake” Business: “Exists to do something for others they can’t/won’t do...

Every successful online business grows in phases. This is the journey of entrepreneurship; Solve a problem > which creates a problem > solve that problem > which creates a new problem. Repeat. While this may seem obvious, it’s hard to see when you’re in the middle of running your own business: Taking calls, creating content, and remembering to pay yourself. I get it. It’s all too easy to get lost in the details, trying to figure it out by yourself. Before you know it, you’ve swapped a 9-5 for...

Reader, Today, I'm going to teach you how "Self-Licking Lollies" 🍭 will ruin your business. I know what you're thinking: What in the 50 Shades Of Grey is that? Well, simply put: It's when your actions/data create a self-fulfilling cycle, due to a flawed assumption. Unfortunately, as founders, we have the illusion of thinking we're smarter than we are. I was 'certain' I knew what my best-selling products were. I had the data. I had the reviews. I had the feedback. But I was ignorant to the...
