Reader,
Today, I'm going to teach you how "Self-Licking Lollies" 🍭 will ruin your business.
I know what you're thinking: What in the 50 Shades Of Grey is that?
Well, simply put:
It's when your actions/data create a self-fulfilling cycle, due to a flawed assumption.
Unfortunately, as founders, we have the illusion of thinking we're smarter than we are.
I was 'certain' I knew what my best-selling products were.
But I was ignorant to the fact I'd 'created' my best sellers.
The data told me what I wanted to hear because I'd made it that way.
One day when building a report, my self-doubt crept in and I began to overthink...
"Sh*t... What if I'm wrong?"
(Sometimes overthinking can be useful!)
So I created a test to see what customers would buy when I didn't influence their journey.
The test proved I was wrong 😬
A "Self-Licking Lolly" would have made my business unnecessarily harder.
Instead, I HALVED my CPA, saving thousands in the process.
On that occasion, I was lucky...
But as founders, we do this all this time...
Assume without question ❌
Reminder:
And therein lies the threat to your business!
So ask yourself?
Where you could be creating "Self-Licking Lollies" 🍭 in your business?
These can be incredibly hard to recognise, so I'll give you some more examples:
Food for thought ey, Reader?
But I'm not going to leave you doubting every decision you've made...
I'm all about making this actionable.
So your task for today...
I think you'll be surprised 😁
That's all for today. Your one key takeaway:
Clean data is your friend. Assumptions are your enemy.
As always, l hope this is useful.

“Unspoken expectations are premeditated resentments.” This quote has been doing the rounds recently... Here's my attempt to make it make sense: I don't know about you, but my brain is chaotic. Imagine a cross between: "The Room Of Requirement" & "A Car Boot Sale Of Ideas" It's mostly junk and unwanted football memorabilia... ...but there's the occasional gem. And yet… The idea that I expect people can assume and make sense of this, void of my communication, is insanity! But for years... this...
Rick Rubin - Co-Founder of Def Jam Records and one of the most successful record producers ever. Last week he was asked the question: “What if other people don’t like your stuff?” His response? “I’m not making it for them, I’m making it for me” I’ve been chewing over this the past week. Here’s why it matters to you… There is a difference between art & business. He was speaking as an artist. Art: “Is created for its own sake” Business: “Exists to do something for others they can’t/won’t do...
Every successful online business grows in phases. This is the journey of entrepreneurship; Solve a problem > which creates a problem > solve that problem > which creates a new problem. Repeat. While this may seem obvious, it’s hard to see when you’re in the middle of running your own business: Taking calls, creating content, and remembering to pay yourself. I get it. It’s all too easy to get lost in the details, trying to figure it out by yourself. Before you know it, you’ve swapped a 9-5 for...
